1870 On December 15, 1870, Lieutenant Gustavus C. Doane, commander of the military escort for the Washburn expedition, completed his report on the exploration of the Upper Yellowstone. It was the first official report on the Upper Yellowstone Country and according to Chittenden "his fine descriptions have never been surpassed" by any writer. Mount Doane was named by the Washburn party for him.
1909 Schooner Wyoming was a six masted schooner and the largest wooden sailing vessel ever built. It was built by Percy and Small in Bath, Maine and launched on December 15, 1909. It was named Wyoming because its principal investors were ranchers and businessmen from the state of Wyoming, including Governor Bryant B. Brooks.
