1985 The bison was adopted as Wyoming's State Mammal on February 23, 1985. It is the largest terrestrial animal in North America, where it is commonly called buffalo. There are more than 100 places in Wyoming with Buffalo as part of their name. Most were named for the animal. According to early records, the city of Buffalo was named for Buffalo, New York. Buffalo Bill Dam and Reservoir was named for the man.
