Independence Rock is named for Independence Day. "The incident which gave rise to it is well known, from various references, which indicate that a party of hunters camped at the base of the rock on a Fourth of July and here celebrated the anniversary of the country's independence."

1924 A bronze statue of William "Buffalo Bill" Cody was placed and dedicated in Cody, Wyoming.
