September 6

1870 The University of Wyoming in Laramie opened for classes on this day in 1870. Laramie is the same city where 70 year-old Louisa Swain cast a vote in the town's municipal election on September 6, 1870. She became the "Nation's first woman voter under laws guaranteeing absolute political equality to women."

1873 In September, 1873, Captain William A. Jones and party completed their exploration of northwestern Wyoming and Yellowstone. On September 6, they passed the Tetons. "To the west, distant forty miles, the Tetons seemed to pierce the sky with their needle-like spires."
