Items Made by Prisoners of War

Permission to use by the Wyoming State Museum, Department of State Parks and Cultural Resources

The acrylic painting of a snowy winter scene with trees and a small house or cabin was done by Austrian POW Josef Szirola while held at Ryan Park POW camp in Wyoming (1943-1945).  Given to donor's father, Meryle Hansen, by prisoner.  Hansen was overseer of POWs while they worked for the lumber company that employed Hansen. It was painted on a lid from an “Akro Agates” marble box.

The clogs and trinket boxes were made by prisoners of war at the Ryan Park POW Camp in Wyoming during WWII. The donor's father worked with the prisoners at the camp. The shoes were given to him as gifts.

Bowie knife and sheath were made by a POW at Detention Camp #2 located at Fort. Francis E. Warren in Cheyenne, Wyoming. It was given to the donor’s father who guarded German prisoners.
